The Executive Mayor of Mahikeng, Cllr Tshepiso Mphehlo attended the Prestige Lecture under the theme : “The place of literary works and media in the sustenance of our indigenous languages and culture in South Africa”. The lecture was done in collaboration with the North West University and the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture. On the panel of discussion with the EM, was the MEC of Sports, Arts and Culture Ms Galebekwe Tlhapi, the departmental HOD Mr Mogorosi, Professor Sonia Swanepoel, Professor Mpho Chaka & Professor Gilbert Motsaathebe from the NWU as well as learners from the University. The discussions centred on how indigenous languages such as Setswana can be sustained in the media and literature space in the form of books and short stories/telenovelas that capture the essence of our languages and culture, with the assistance of various stakeholders and key role players.

Launching of the First Cyber-Lab in Ngaka Modiri Molema at Setumo High School.
The Executive Mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality joined The Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Mondli Gungubele, made a formal donation of 40 laptops to Setumo Secondary School in Majemantsho. This initiative is strategically designed to enhance online learning capabilities for learners, with a particular focus on supporting Grade 12 learners in their applications to higher education institutions.
Moreover, the Minister inaugurated a cyberlab at the school, which will offer additional resources and assist learners in effectively navigating the digital landscape.
The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, in collaboration with the Department of Education in the North West under the MEC Viola Motsumi, acknowledged the proactive efforts of the State Information Technology Agency (SITA) in aligning its initiatives with socio-environmental development goals, thereby fulfilling its commitment to social responsibility. The agency aims to positively influence communities and contribute to societal progress.
During the event, Mr. Gungubele was accompanied by Mahikeng Local Municipality Mayor Tshepiso Mphehlo and MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Madoda Sambatha. They underscored the significance of safeguarding the laptops and the cyberlab, emphasizing that these resources are designed to benefit and empower the learners of Setumo Secondary School, ultimately fostering their educational development and future opportunities.

The official launch of the AgriHub by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the North West University took place yesterday at the NWU Molelwane Experimental Farm.
The Agri-Hub initiative will serve as a key platform for emerging farmers, equipping them with the technical expertise and business acumen needed to establish sustainable and competitive agricultural enterprises. Through hands-on training and exposure to modern farming techniques, young agripreneurs will be better positioned to integrate into the broader agricultural value chain.
The Executive Mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality was amongst the dignitaries that graced the occasion and he stressed that the local communities must be assisted “to supply their products in the private market such as restaurants, fruit and vegetable wholesalers etc.”
.Mahikeng Local Municipality during its Council sitting which was held on Thursday the 30th January 2025 appointed 05 Directors, Mr Lekgoa Mahole as Director Corporate Support Services, Mr Tiro Seleka, Community Services, Ms Nokuthula Phamodi, Socio-Economic Development, Mr Ofentse Masibi, Public Safety and Mr Ikotlhaeng Khesa as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). We welcome and wish them well in their new endeavours.
20 Sep 2024 – Mahikeng Local Municipality Resealing Project in Mmabatho Unit 15, Ward 02, Cydonia Road is nearing completion.The road is primarily used to transport commuters to and from various locations and children to school, the road serves as a major transfer point for motorists and taxi operators.The Executive Mayor Cllr Tshepiso Mphehlo is impressed by progress made so far.
