MLM Wins Bid To Host 2016 IMSSA Games
31 July 2015 – Polokwane
Mahikeng Local Municipality will host the Inter Municipal Sports South Africa (IMSSA) games for 2016. This was after the Local Municipality’s successful bid contest which held in Capricorn District Municipality in Limpopo on 31st July 2015. The concept of Southern African Inter-Municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA) started in 2003 with the main idea of unifying municipal workers within the Southern African Development Countries (SADC) region. The IMSSA games aims to improve morale and health of municipal employees in all countries within SADC by promoting physical activities which includes different sporting codes and games. The IMSSA also seeks to promote regional collaboration, integration, knowledge sharing, training and capacity building by rotating games to various municipalities. The rotation of games will improve the knowledge to host the games of a magnitude and availing a platform for continuous team building amongst municipal employees and councillors.
The Municipality’s eager to host such a prestige event is to promote Mahikeng as a tourist destination and also to provide a good opportunity for local residents to interact with their fellow Africans from other African countries. Botswana was the first country in SADC to host the IMSSA games in September 2003 and South African municipalities participated for the first time. In 2004, it was hosted in South Africa by eThekwini Metro (Kwa Zulu Natal) and countries such as Swaziland were part of the tournament. Then Swaziland hosted in 2005 where the increase in participating municipalities was realised and in 2006 Buffalo City in East London hosted the games. In 2007 the games took place in Namibia, Walvis Bay during the same year. This year’s games will be held in Maseru, Lesotho in September.
