Mahikeng Municipality is hosting Youth lndaba
The Mahikeng Local Municipality is hosting a Youth lndaba in which more than 500 youths are taking part and sharing ideas.
The event which starts today (Wednesday) and ends tomorrow (Thursday) has Mahikeng Executive Mayor, Councillor Betty Diakanyo as the main speaker.
Cllr Diakanyo said in her acceptance speech earlier this year that as part of her 100 days in office, she would convene the Youth Indaba and this massive event will be an approach initiated by her to deal with factors such as unemployment, poverty and inequality in Mahikeng.
“Our young people need to be educated today and be given proper skills that will benefit them tomorrow. Some of the youth do have skills but do not have the right information on how to utilize those skills to benefit them. Some have the information but do not have the skill and when those two people are working together greater achievements can be reached”, Cllr Diakanyo said.
According to spokesperson of the Mahikeng Local Municipality, Sechaba Makgetha, young people who are attending the event are working together with various stakeholders such as government entities, private business sector and youth development agencies to come up with solutions to the socio-economic challenges facing young people in the city particularly as they relate to jobs and skills.
He said other organizations such as NYDA, SEDA and Old Mutual are presenting opportunities that can be offered to them, help connect youth to job opportunities, career information, scholarships, bursary programs and enterprise development, be provided with a platform to empower themselves with the tools available to obtain employment and develop appropriate skills.
