Betty Diakanyo is the New Mayor of Mahikeng
The newly elected Executive Mayor of Mahikeng Betty Diakanyo has taken oath of office and has assumed her responsibilities with immediate effect. Her ascendance to power came after the African National Congress garnered sufficient votes to form a council in Mahikeng Local Municipality.
As a former Speaker of the local municipality, Diakanyo is not new to local government. She brings with here a lot of political experience as both an activist of the ANC and a government functionary.
Interviewed immediately after being elected as a Mayor, Diakanyo said that she firstly wants to lay a solid foundation and take Mahikeng to the top. She also spoke passionately about the Mahikeng Renewal Rebranding and Repositioning programme which aims at revitalizing infrastructure and promoting the socio-economic development in Mahikeng. She unequivocally declared that “What we need to do is to put people first and work to bring back Mahikeng to be the leading municipality. We need good governance, a viable and vibrant municipality that becomes an example in the province.” The new Executive Mayor did not mince her words as she spoke fearlessly against poor waste management in the city and open spaces that attracts illegal dumping around Mahikeng. Those who have worked with her describe the new Executive Mayor as a hard worker, a disciplinarian and a no nonsense administrator who is result oriented. As a former member of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee, the new Executive Mayor assured the people of Mahikeng that each and every cent of the municipality will have to be accounted for and that she will do everything in her power to ensure compliance with all the laws governing the finances of the municipality. She called upon senior officials in the municipality to put systems in place to ensure that Mahikeng Local Municipality achieves clean audit outcomes and compliance with the Auditor General’s requirements.
The Executive Mayor’s philosophy on governance is centered on three principles which are consultation, communication and service delivery. It is expected that the new Executive Mayor will continue to meet various sectors in Mahikeng through the Integrated Development Programme consultative forum and the stakeholder outreach programmes.
