MAHIKENG LOCAL MUNICIPALITY UNDERTAKES SITE VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICAN BUREAU OF STANDARDS (SABS) WATER LABORATORY
The Mahikeng Local Municipality (MLM) undertook a strategic site visit to the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) at its Groenkloof Campus in Pretoria, specifically to the SABS Water Laboratory.
The visit, held at the Mzansi Committee Room, 3rd Floor SABS Groenkloof Campus from 11:00 to 14:00, was aimed at providing the Municipality with an in-depth understanding of the capabilities and services offered by the SABS Water Laboratory.
The objectives of the visit included understanding water quality testing and analysis processes, applicable South African and international standards, product testing and conformity assessment requirements, and how SABS laboratory services can support municipal water quality management and infrastructure projects.
The programme included a presentation on the purpose of the visit by the Divisional Head of Laboratory and Technical Lead: Food & Health, followed by an update on the status of the Implementation Plan between SABS and MLM. The delegation also undertook a guided tour of the Water Laboratory, which included sample reception and registration, sample preparation, testing and analytical areas, laboratory equipment and instrumentation, quality control procedures, data recording and reporting, as well as health, safety and environmental requirements.
This engagement forms part of Mahikeng Local Municipality’s commitment to strengthening water quality management, ensuring compliance with SANS standards, and improving service delivery to communities through credible, scientifically verified water testing.
The Municipality appreciates the technical expertise and support offered by SABS and looks forward to strengthening this collaboration in the interest of providing safe and quality water to the people of Mahikeng.

The Executive Mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality, Cllr. Tshepiso Mphehlo accompanied by the Director for Local Economic Development, *Ms. Nokuthula Phamodi*, attended the prestigious event in support of local economic growth and investment.
The Crossing Mall was represented by Mr. Smital Rambhai

NATIONAL ASSEMBLY PASSES THE MUNICIPAL DEMARCATION AUTHORITY BILL
Parliament, Wednesday, 12 August 2026 – The National Assembly (NA) yesterday passed the Independent Municipal Demarcation Authority Bill.
The Bill provides for the establishment of an Independent Municipal Demarcation Authority, which will replace the current Municipal Demarcation Board under a new legislative framework. It sets out the criteria and procedures for determining and redetermining municipal boundaries and for delimiting municipalities into wards. The Bill also seeks to ensure that municipal boundaries support effective local governance, the equitable and sustainable provision of services, integrated development and economic development.
Other important provisions in the Bill include public participation in municipal boundary determinations and ward delimitation. This means that communities can comment on and object to proposed decisions, while a Demarcation Appeals Authority will provide a mechanism for challenging certain demarcation decisions. The Bill also includes information technology among the areas of knowledge and expertise that may be considered when appointing members of the Board.
In addition, the selection panel responsible for recommending Board members will include representation from the National Assembly oversight committee responsible for local government and the National House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders, along with the other representatives provided for in the Bill.
The National Assembly first passed the Bill on 30 November 2023 and sent it to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) for concurrence. However, the Bill lapsed at the end of the Sixth Parliament in May 2024 and was revived by the NCOP on 29 July 2024. The Council passed the Bill with amendments on 27 November last year. After considering the NCOP’s amendments, the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs recommended that the NA concur with them.
Today the House adopted the committee’s report, concurred with the NCOP’s amendments and passed the Bill.
The Bill will now be sent to the President for assent.

[DEPUTY MINISTER BOSHIELO TO LEAD LAUNCH OF CAMPUS COMMUNITY SAFETY FORUM AT NORTH WEST UNIVERSITY’S MAHIKENG CAMPUS]
Deputy Minister of Police, Dr Polly Boshielo, will this week lead the launch of a Campus Community Safety Forum at North West University’s (NWU) Mahikeng Campus.
The launch forms part of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) continued commitment to strengthening safety at institutions of higher learning through the establishment of Campus Community Safety Forums.
These forums provide a collaborative and proactive platform for the #SAPS, campus management, students, staff and other stakeholders to work together to prevent and combat crime both on and off campus, while promoting safer learning and living environments.
The launch will take place from 13 to 14 August 2026 and will include the signing of a Campus Community Safety Forum pledge, as well as a career exhibition aimed at exposing students to career opportunities within law enforcement.

The Executive Mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality, Cllr Tshepiso Mphehlo joined the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Buti Manamela and MEC Madoda Sambatha in the National Launch of Services Seta internship program “To the PowerX2” which will take 20 000 Graduates across the country.
The Executive Mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality, Cllr Tshepiso Mphehlo joined the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Buti Manamela and MEC Madoda Sambatha in the National Launch of Services Seta internship program “To the PowerX2” which will take 20 000 Graduates across the country.
Minister Buti Manamela used the launch of PowerX² to reinforce the importance of occupational skills in building a working South Africa.
The country needs plumbers, electricians, welders, mechanics, technicians and artisans alongside professionals in the digital economy. As AI and automation transform the workplace, South Africa will still need people to build homes, install energy systems and maintain water infrastructure.

Mahikeng Local Municipality in partnership with the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) officially launched the 1st Annual Farmers Market last night at Mmabatho Palms.
The launch was preceded by the Mahikeng Local Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr. Tshepiso Mphehlo accompanied the acting Municipal Manager Mr. Ofentse Masibi and Senior Management Team, briefed the media on the vision and objectives of the Farmers Market.
The briefing highlighted how the initiative will stimulate local economic growth, create opportunities for emerging farmers and provide residents with access to quality locally produced goods.
Held under the theme “Hands That Create Economic Wealth,” the launch brought together farmers from across the Mahikeng municipal area, who will showcase and sell a wide range of fresh produce, agricultural products, and value-added goods at the Mahikeng Farmers Market taking place on Friday, 7 August and Saturday, 8 August 2026, at the Mmabatho Stadium Parking Area.
The Municipality also encouraged local SMMEs and producers to pursue SABS product certification, enabling them to earn the Proudly South African mark of quality. Certification enhances consumer confidence, improves market access, and positions local businesses to compete in broader markets while contributing to sustainable economic development.
The Mahikeng Farmers Market forms part of the Municipality’s ongoing commitment to supporting local agriculture, empowering entrepreneurs, creating jobs, and building a resilient local economy.

These interns have completed their theoretical part of their studies and are now ready to explore and learn the practical aspects of their different courses. They will be placed in various departments in accordance to their practical study requirements. The induction was made possible through the Corporate Support Services, under the leadership of the Senior Manager, Mr Mahole.
