Mahikeng Local Municipality mourns the passing of former North West Premier and struggle veteran, Kaobitsa “Bushy” Maape, who died in Johannesburg on Saturday, 16 May 2026 after a short illness.
Maape dedicated his life to the liberation and development of South Africa. He commanded the Kgalagadi Underground Machinery, was incarcerated on Robben Island in the 1980s and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from UNISA while imprisoned.
