MAHIKENG LOCAL MUNICIPALITY DISTANCES ITSELF FROM FALSE AND UNLAWFUL NOTICE
Mahikeng Local Municipality distances itself from the fraudulent poster currently circulating on social media regarding the alleged closure of schools in Mahikeng due to taxi-related disruptions.
The Municipality confirms that it did not issue, authorise, or approve the said notice. The use of the Municipality’s name and contact details in the pamphlet is unlawful, misleading, and intended to cause unnecessary panic within communities.
Mahikeng Local Municipality remains committed to its constitutional mandate of service delivery and does not have the authority to unlawfully prohibit learners from accessing education.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has also denounced the circulating notice and any related unlawful activities aimed at disrupting schooling and public order.
Members of the public are urged to exercise vigilance and caution against misinformation circulating on social media, and to rely only on official communication platforms for verified and credible information.

MAHIKENG LOCAL MUNICIPALITY MOURNS THE PASSING OF FORMER NORTH WEST PREMIER KAOBITSA “BUSHY” MAAPE
Mahikeng Local Municipality mourns the passing of former North West Premier and struggle veteran, Kaobitsa “Bushy” Maape, who died in Johannesburg on Saturday, 16 May 2026 after a short illness.
Maape dedicated his life to the liberation and development of South Africa. He commanded the Kgalagadi Underground Machinery, was incarcerated on Robben Island in the 1980s and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from UNISA while imprisoned.
After 1994, he served in senior government roles before being recalled from retirement to stabilise the North West Province. As Premier, he lifted Section 100, relaunched the Provincial Bursary Scheme and introduced the Thuntsha Lerole Accelerated Service Delivery Plan.
In 2021, former President Thabo Mbeki conferred upon him the UNISA Robben Island Award for exemplary service to South African society.
Executive Mayor Tshepiso Mphehlo extends sincere condolences to the Maape family and the people of the North West Province.
“Comrade Bushy Maape served without seeking recognition. He invested in education, in governance and in the dignity of communities. Mahikeng mourns a leader of rare integrity” said Executive Mayor Mphehlo.

Mahikeng Local Municipality continues to accelerate service delivery through key infrastructure development, with progress currently underway on the Corner Agaat and Caledon streets, Reviera Park.
The project forms part of the municipality’s broader commitment to improving road networks and enhancing accessibility for residents. Once completed, the road will provide safer and more efficient transport for the local community, while also supporting economic activity in the area. The municipality has reiterated its dedication to strengthening infrastructure across all wards, ensuring that no community is left behind in the delivery of basic services

The first edition of the Mahikeng Local Municipality Marathon proved to be a major success as hundreds of athletes, fitness enthusiasts and supporters gathered at Mmabatho Stadium for a historic day of sport and community celebration.
The marathon featured three exciting race categories the demanding 42.2km full marathon, the 21.1km half marathon and the family-friendly 5km fun run attracting participants from across the North West Province and beyond South Africa’s borders.
What made the event even more remarkable was the participation of athletes from Kenya adding an international flavour and raising the competitive standard of the race.
From the early hours of the morning, the atmosphere around Mmabatho Stadium was electric as runners warmed up and music filled the air.
The marathon route showcased parts of Mahikeng while promoting healthy living, active lifestyles and tourism opportunities within the municipality. Local businesses, vendors and community organisations also benefited from the increased activity brought by the event.
Speaking during the prize giving occasion, the Mahikeng Local Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr. Tshepiso Mphehlo praised the successful hosting of the marathon and highlighted its importance in positioning Mahikeng as a growing destination for major sporting events in the North West Province.
The municipality also acknowledged the role played by organisers, sponsors, security personnel, emergency services, volunteers and community members in ensuring the smooth running of the event.
The first-ever Mahikeng Local Municipality Marathon has now laid a strong foundation for what is expected to become an annual sporting spectacle attracting even more athletes from across South Africa and the African continent.
As runners crossed the finish line to loud cheers and applause, the event left behind unforgettable memories and renewed hope for the growth of athletics and community development in Mahikeng.

and Telkom just to name a few, this gala dinner was more than a dinner, It was a celebration of community, sport, and the spirit of MafTown coming alive. We honoured our N12 Marathon Champ, Letlhogonolo Mocumi, who thanked our partners, and brought together runners, leaders, and the community to share one table before we take to the streets on 09 May 2026.
This is Mahikeng Local Municipality’s way of saying thank you to everyone helping to make our town more lively, active, and united for all.

Mahikeng Local Municipality Congratulates N12 Ultra Marathon Winner The Mahikeng Local Municipality extends its well wishes to the 21.5km distance Marathon winner, Letlhogonolo Mocumi who hails from Mocoseng, Phefeni in Ward 14 in Mahikeng. The N12 Ultra Marathon 2026 was held in Potchefstroom for the 21.5km, 10km and 5km while the 50km started in Klerksdorp on the 2nd May 2026. MLM would like to encourage more young members of the community of Mahikeng to participate in such sporting events as they create a healthy and active lifestyle and bring people from all walks of life together. #RataMahikeng

The Mahikeng Local Municipality continues to demonstrate its commitment to improving infrastructure, with steady progress being made on the construction of a 3.2km internal road linking Top Village to Lonely Park in Ward 29.
The ongoing project forms part of the municipality’s broader strategy to enhance service delivery through the development of critical infrastructure.
The upgraded route is also set to enhance road safety while reducing travel times within the area. Beyond mobility, the project is anticipated to have a positive impact on local economic activity that often attracts small businesses and enables smoother transportation of goods and services, contributing to economic growth at a community level.
The municipality has reaffirmed that infrastructure development remains a central pillar in its efforts to restore and advance service delivery across all wards. Projects such as this road construction initiative highlight a focused approach to building sustainable communities and improving the overall quality of life for residents of Ward 29.

The Mahikeng Local Municipality, South African Police Service and Fox Tactical, Crime Prevention and Response Unit led a successful Joint Operation around the Mahikeng CBD. The local security cluster unearthed deadly weapons in a form of illegal firearms, knives and illegal drugs. These unannounced Joint Operations Commands will be conducted to ensure safety and security of the residents of Mahikeng and deal away with drug abuse.

 The Mahikeng Local Municipality held a focused Local Economic Development (LED) Strategy Review session aimed at accelerating economic growth, attracting investment and creating sustainable employment opportunities in Mahikeng.
The day one (1) session was attended by the Mahikeng Local Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr. Tshepiso Mphehlo, Speaker of Council Cllr. Gagoangwe Mathe, Single of Whip of Council Cllr. Monametsi Moeti, Municipal Manager Dineo Mongwaketse, Municipal Senior Managers, MMC’s, Councillors, DEDECT officials, South African Local Government Association North West (SALGA), South African Revenue Service (SARS) and other dignitaries, brought together key stakeholders from government and the economic sector to align strategies and priorities.
In his welcoming remarks, the Executive Cllr. Mayor Tshepiso Mphehlo highlighted the importance of inclusive participation in shaping a resilient local economy and set the tone by outlining the municipality’s vision for economic transformation, focusing on inclusive growth, investment attraction and strengthened partnerships.
The Provincial priorities were presented by the Department of Economic Development, Conservation and Tourism Hon. MEC Bitsa Lenkopane, who emphasised key sectors such as industrial development, tourism and environmental sustainability.
Municipal Manager Adv. Dineo Mongwaketse provided an overview of the current economic landscape, followed by interactive discussions where stakeholders identified key elements to strengthen the Local Economic Development strategy.
The economic insights were further shared by the North West Provincial Treasury, highlighting growth opportunities across sectors, while additional discussions focused on positioning Mahikeng as an attractive investment destination.
The session concluded with a presentation on the Economic Revitalisation and Regeneration Programme, outlining practical steps to stimulate local economic activity. The LED Strategy Review session forms part of ongoing efforts to build a more inclusive, resilient and economically vibrant Mahikeng.

Today marked a significantly important day for the people of Mahikeng and the municipality as the National Prosecuting Authority through the Asset Forfeiture Unit handed over the infamous Marang Estate area.
The land in question, was unlawfully sold for far less than its value, and with the intervention of the NPA, it was acquired and handed back to its rightful owners. The Executive Mayor, Cllr Tshepiso Mphehlo, received 21 title deeds from Adv. Andy Mothibi, the National Director of Public Prosecutions for the municipality. Adv Mothibi emphasised that the NPA is sending a clear message to the public that, those who know they are illegally in possession of assets that belong to government, should voluntarily hand themselves in before they get to them.
The NPA also transferred unfinished residential blocks and building material to the Social Housing Regulatory Authority SHRA) to continue with projects and hand them over to the community of Mahikeng. The handover was followed by a drive by to the Marang Estate area with dignitaries including the Local and District Executive Mayors, the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Director of Public Prosecutions, the Acting CEO of SHRA, Council Chairperson of SHRA, MLM Municipal Manager, Senior Management and officials of all stakeholders.

The Mahikeng Local Municipality held a heartfelt burial service in honour of the late Ward 02 and Municipal Public Account Committee Chairperson (MPAC), Cllr. Tshepiso “Zela” Motshabi at the Mmabatho Civic Centre today.
The burial service drew a large number of mourners from across the Mahikeng community. Proceedings were led by the Mahikeng Local Municipality Executive Mayor Tshepiso Mphehlo,accompanied by The Speaker of Council Gagoangwe Mathe, Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality Executive Mayor Khumalo Molefe, Ratlou Local Municipality Executive Mayor Matlhomola Jafta, Ditsobotla Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Molefe Morutshe, North West Province Legislature Members of the Executive Council Hon. Viola Motsumi, Gaoage Oageng Molapisi and Keneetswe Mosenogi, MMC’s, Councillors, representatives from the African National Congress, Magosi and other dignitaries reflecting the profound impact Cllr. Motshabi had as a public servant, community leader and passionate supporter of football development.
Speakers at the service described Motshabi as a dedicated councillor who always placed the needs of the people first. As a committed member of the African National Congress, he played an active role in community development initiatives aimed at improving the lives of residents of Mahikeng in particular Ward 2. Throughout his leadership journey, Motshabi was known for his commitment to community development and his unwavering belief in empowering young people through sport and social initiatives. His love for football saw him champion grassroots development programmes, helping to create opportunities for young players from disadvantaged communities.
Following the emotional burial service, mourners proceeded to the Matlalong Heroes’ Acre where Motshabi was laid to rest with dignity and honour among other distinguished individuals who have served the community in distinction. The funeral was marked by heartfelt tributes, prayers and moments of reflection as those in attendance remembered a man whose life was defined by service, leadership and passion for uplifting others. Motshabi’s passing leaves a deep void in the Mahikeng community, but his legacy of unity, youth empowerment and dedication to public service will continue to inspire many.

Mahikeng has once again been placed firmly on the global map following the remarkable achievement of Mr Herman Kordom, affectionately known as Sensei Kordom, who was recently honoured in the United States of America with the prestigious Action Martial Arts Hall of Honours Grand Master Silver Lifetime Achiever Award.
Sensei Kordom, a revered martial arts pioneer from Mahikeng in the North West Province, received this international recognition for his outstanding contribution to the development and promotion of martial arts in South Africa for over four decades.
The award celebrates his lifelong dedication, leadership and impact in nurturing athletes and advancing the discipline both locally and internationally. His recent accolade adds to an already distinguished career that has seen him inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2022 in Fullerton, California becoming the first South African to receive such recognition at that level.
Through his achievements, Sensei Kordom continues to elevate the profile of Mahikeng and the North West Province on the world stage. Over the years, he has represented South Africa with pride in numerous global competitions and events including multiple World Ju Jitsu Championships in countries such as the United States, Argentina, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Brazil and China.
The Action Martial Arts Hall of Honours Grand Master Silver Lifetime Achiever Award stands as a testament to his enduring legacy, unwavering commitment and exceptional leadership within the sporting fraternity. His achievement is not only a personal milestone but a proud moment for Mahikeng, the North West Province and South Africa at large.
As he continues to inspire future generations, Sensei Herman Kordom remains a symbol of excellence, resilience and global impact a true ambassador of South African martial arts.

St Mary’s Secondary School in Lomanyaneng village, marked a significant milestone in youth and community development with the official handover of a new multi-purpose sports field, made possible through the MultiChoice Group’s Let’s Play initiative.
To date, the Let’s Play programme has reached over 300 schools across South Africa, reinforcing MultiChoice’s long-term commitment to youth development through sport.
Speaking at the event, the MultiChoice Executive Vice President: Public Affairs Dr. Keabetswe Modimoeng highlighted that the Let’s Play programme goes beyond infrastructure development and the integrated approach ensures that the facilities are not built but are sustainably used to nurture talent, promote healthy lifestyles and develop life skills among young people.
The presence of the Executive Mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality, Honourable Cllr. Tshepiso Mphehlo, added significance to the occasion. The Mayor praised the initiative as a meaningful investment in the future of local youth, noting that access to proper sports facilities plays a crucial role in crime prevention, health promotion and social cohesion.
The new multi-purpose sports field stands as a symbol of partnership between the private sector, local government, schools and communities demonstrating how collaboration can drive positive and lasting impact. As learners took to the field for the first time, the excitement was evident: a clear reminder that when communities invest in youth, they invest in a stronger, healthier future.

Mahikeng Local Municipality would like to inform its residents and motorists that the road on corner D424 and Visser Street in Golfview is now open for traffic and pedestrians use. The Municipality would like to thank everyone for their patience, understanding and cooperation during the construction of the road. We also urge all road users to be vigilant and cautious and to adhere to speed limits because there are speed humps constructed for speed reduction purposes. Pedestrians are also requested to be careful when using the side walkways as final construction work is still ongoing.
The Mahikeng Local Municipality is making significant strides in its ongoing commitment to enhancing local infrastructure, with visible progress on the internal road project that connects Jikeleza, Lerato Café, and Magogoe Koi-Koi. This vital 3.4-kilometer stretch, which spans across Wards 14, 19, and 34, is steadily taking shape, marking a key milestone in efforts to improve community mobility and service delivery.
Once completed, the new road will not only connect important community hubs but also reduce travel times, support local businesses and provide safer, more reliable access for pedestrians, motorists and emergency services alike.
The initiative is part of Mahikeng Local Municipality’s broader plan to rehabilitate and upgrade key infrastructure nodes across the region. With the Lerato Café and Jikeleza section already complete and Magogoe Koikoi is progressing swiftly, the municipality is on track to deliver a finished road that will greatly improve the quality of life for residents of Magogoe and surrounding areas.

We welcome and wish them well in their new endeavours.
20 Sep 2024 – Mahikeng Local Municipality Resealing Project in Mmabatho Unit 15, Ward 02, Cydonia Road is nearing completion.The road is primarily used to transport commuters to and from various locations and children to school, the road serves as a major transfer point for motorists and taxi operators.The Executive Mayor Cllr Tshepiso Mphehlo is impressed by progress made so far.
