Mahikeng Local Municipality in partnership with the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) officially launched the 1st Annual Farmers Market last night at Mmabatho Palms.
Mahikeng Local Municipality in partnership with the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) officially launched the 1st Annual Farmers Market last night at Mmabatho Palms.
The launch was preceded by the Mahikeng Local Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr. Tshepiso Mphehlo accompanied the acting Municipal Manager Mr. Ofentse Masibi and Senior Management Team, briefed the media on the vision and objectives of the Farmers Market.
The briefing highlighted how the initiative will stimulate local economic growth, create opportunities for emerging farmers and provide residents with access to quality locally produced goods.
Held under the theme “Hands That Create Economic Wealth,” the launch brought together farmers from across the Mahikeng municipal area, who will showcase and sell a wide range of fresh produce, agricultural products, and value-added goods at the Mahikeng Farmers Market taking place on Friday, 7 August and Saturday, 8 August 2026, at the Mmabatho Stadium Parking Area.
The Municipality also encouraged local SMMEs and producers to pursue SABS product certification, enabling them to earn the Proudly South African mark of quality. Certification enhances consumer confidence, improves market access, and positions local businesses to compete in broader markets while contributing to sustainable economic development.
The Mahikeng Farmers Market forms part of the Municipality’s ongoing commitment to supporting local agriculture, empowering entrepreneurs, creating jobs, and building a resilient local economy.

Mahikeng Local Municipality through its Memorandum of Understanding with Taletso TVET College, welcomed 8 interns who will be navigating the working environment for the next 18months. These interns have completed their theoretical part of their studies and are now ready to explore and learn the practical aspects of their different courses. They will be placed in various departments in accordance to their practical study requirements. The induction was made possible through the Corporate Support Services, under the leadership of the Senior Manager, Mr Mahole.

The North West MEC for Public Works and Roads, Honourable Sempe Elizabeth Mokua accompanied by Head of Department PST. Moses Kgantsi, today led a stakeholder engagement session with residents from Gelukspan, Uitkyk, Naauwpoort, Makouspan and Nooigedacht at the Gelukspan Multipurpose Centre in the jurisdiction of the Mahikeng Local Municipality.
The North West MEC for Public Works and Roads, Honourable Sempe Elizabeth Mokua accompanied by Head of Department PST. The engagement was attended by Mahikeng Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr. Tshepiso Mphehlo, Office of the Speaker, Cllr. Gagoangwe Mathe, alongside Government Officials, Traditional Leaders, Ward Councillors representatives and Community Stakeholders, demonstrating a united commitment to improving road infrastructure and strengthening service delivery across the affected communities.
The meeting provided a platform for residents to engage directly with the MEC and raise concerns regarding the condition of roads in their respective areas. Community members highlighted key infrastructure challenges affecting daily travel, access to essential services and local economic activities.
The Department also shared updates on planned road infrastructure interventions and encouraged ongoing cooperation between government and communities to ensure that development projects are implemented effectively and benefit all residents.
The stakeholder engagement forms part of the North West Department of Public Works and Roads’ continued efforts to promote public participation, transparent governance and the delivery of safe, reliable and accessible road infrastructure throughout the province.

EMPOWERING LOCAL SMMEs THROUGH THE FARMERS MARKET
This morning, Mahikeng Local Municipality through the Local Economic Development Unit hosted its 2nd Farmers Market at the municipal premises.
The market created a platform for local SMMEs to display, sell, and create awareness about their products and services.
Community members came out in numbers to support local businesses, purchase goods, and build networks for future opportunities.
This is part of our ongoing commitment to grow the local economy and support entrepreneurship. More markets will be hosted to give SMMEs the platform they deserve.

Joint Operation in Action
Mahikeng Local Municipality, together with other government stakeholders, held a Joint Operation across the CBD.
The operation focused on, law enforcement, by-law compliance , service delivery inspections, illegal selling of expired goods, informal trading and unlicensed trading to ensure safer, cleaner, and more orderly Mahikeng town.
Working together with SAPS, Business License Officers and By-Law Enforcement Officers MLM continues to strengthen partnerships for better service delivery.

PROJECT COMPLETE: Riviera Park Roads
Mahikeng Local Municipality has successfully completed the re-sealing road project at Riviera Park.
The upgrade improves road safety, reduces potholes, and makes travel smoother for residents and motorists in the area.
Service delivery continues as more infrastructure projects unfold across Mahikeng.

Update on load rotation in Mahikeng
Customers in Mahikeng and nearby villages supplied by the Lotlhakane substation are advised that load rotation has ended following the successful commissioning of the mobile substation. Our technicians worked diligently to implement this temporary solution and prevent further load rotation due to overload.
The recent theft and vandalism incident severely affected power supply to the area. Eskom encourages customers to support efforts to prevent theft and vandalism of infrastructure.
Our technicians continue to work tirelessly to effect repairs to the damaged substation and ensure full normalisation of the network.
Eskom appreciates the patience and support from customers during this period.

The spirit of youth empowerment, unity and remembrance filled the air at Mocoseng as the Mahikeng Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr. Tshepiso Mphehlo, joined hundreds of community members and young people at the Khuting Tournament held in commemoration of Youth Day on 16 June.
The tournament brought together Tournament Organisers, Hollywood Bet, talented young athletes from surrounding areas and across Botswana in a celebration of sport, community development and the enduring legacy of the youth of 1976. Participants showcased their skills and determination on the field while spectators gathered in large numbers to support local teams and enjoy a day dedicated to honouring the sacrifices made by young South Africans in the struggle for freedom and equal education.
The four days Khuting Tournament also served as a platform for promoting social cohesion and through the competition and teamwork, participants demonstrated the power of sport in bringing communities together and creating positive alternatives for youth development. Community members welcomed the Mayor’s presence at the event, describing it as a sign of the municipality’s commitment to engaging with young people and supporting the tournament initiatives.
As the nation commemorates Youth Day, events such as the Khuting Tournament continue to remind communities of the important role young people play in driving social progress and development. The gathering at Mocoseng stood as a fitting tribute to the legacy of June 16 and a celebration of the potential that lies within the youth of Mahikeng.

The first edition of the Mahikeng Local Municipality Marathon proved to be a major success as hundreds of athletes, fitness enthusiasts and supporters gathered at Mmabatho Stadium for a historic day of sport and community celebration.
The marathon featured three exciting race categories the demanding 42.2km full marathon, the 21.1km half marathon and the family-friendly 5km fun run attracting participants from across the North West Province and beyond South Africa’s borders.
What made the event even more remarkable was the participation of athletes from Kenya adding an international flavour and raising the competitive standard of the race.
From the early hours of the morning, the atmosphere around Mmabatho Stadium was electric as runners warmed up and music filled the air.
The marathon route showcased parts of Mahikeng while promoting healthy living, active lifestyles and tourism opportunities within the municipality. Local businesses, vendors and community organisations also benefited from the increased activity brought by the event.
Speaking during the prize giving occasion, the Mahikeng Local Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr. Tshepiso Mphehlo praised the successful hosting of the marathon and highlighted its importance in positioning Mahikeng as a growing destination for major sporting events in the North West Province.
The municipality also acknowledged the role played by organisers, sponsors, security personnel, emergency services, volunteers and community members in ensuring the smooth running of the event.
The first-ever Mahikeng Local Municipality Marathon has now laid a strong foundation for what is expected to become an annual sporting spectacle attracting even more athletes from across South Africa and the African continent.
As runners crossed the finish line to loud cheers and applause, the event left behind unforgettable memories and renewed hope for the growth of athletics and community development in Mahikeng.
20 Sep 2024 – Mahikeng Local Municipality Resealing Project in Mmabatho Unit 15, Ward 02, Cydonia Road is nearing completion.The road is primarily used to transport commuters to and from various locations and children to school, the road serves as a major transfer point for motorists and taxi operators.The Executive Mayor Cllr Tshepiso Mphehlo is impressed by progress made so far.
