MLM Mayor Visits Destitute Families

Christmas is a perfect reminder that we should never become too busy to live that we eventually forget that we need to make a life. Christmas also brings new hope for all of us. In that spirit the Executive Mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality, Cllr KB Diakanyo, handed over an emergency RDP house to 99 year old Mariah Moepi in Lonely Park outside Mahikeng.

Moepi, who is also blind, has been staying in a one roomed shack with her late 65 year old mentally disabled son. The municipality had to intervene through a Ward Councillor and the Executive Mayor who coordinated the process of providing decent shelter through the Department of Local Government and Human Settlements Hon. Gaolaolwe.

Mayor Diakanyo visited three families on the 22 December 2017 to spread the Christmas spirit among the beneficiaries. The first family to be visited was of Monni Seboletswe of Dikgatlong Village outside Mahikeng Central Business District. The Seboletswe family, whose 11 members, six of whom are children, lived in a dilapidated house, received two temporary shacks to use while awaiting construction of their free government house.

Mayor Diakanyo then moved on to the Motsumi family headed by the 84year old Thekiso Motsumi in Lotlhakane village. The Motsumis also received a temporary shack and groceries.  Motsumi’s daughter, Modiegi said residents of Lotlhakane are happy with what the Municipality is doing through the Setsokotsane 10 by 10 campaign that takes place every month across Bokone Bophirima’s Municipalities.

“Last month we saw the municipality busy fixing our roads. Just recently our high mast light started working after we have been in the dark for years and today the Mayor is here to provide us with shelter and food. We are so grateful for all that”, Modiegi Motsumi said.

The Mayor concluded the day’s visits at 83 year old Ontefetse Sello’s home in lonely park. He is also one of those still waiting for a government provided house and received groceries.
