Mahikeng – A New Beginning is Launched!

The Executive Mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality hosted a media briefing where the name Mafikeng was launched as Mahikeng on Monday 10th September. The launch, held at the Botanical Park in Mmabatho, was attended by the Mayor, Cllr Lenah Miga, her Mayoral Committee Members, cllrs, Kgosikgolo Jeff Montshioa with his tribal council, and members of the media.

Those who attended had the privilege to hear about the brief history behind the name Mahikeng from one of the tribal council members, Mr Rasenti. “The Mahikeng came into existence in 1881, which was derived from “Mahika” meaning rocks as the area had many rocks. Then when the settlers led by Sir Charles Warren came, they changed it to Mafeking in 1885. In 1985, the name changed to Mafikeng, and today we are repeating history by taking it back to its original name Mahikeng” said Mr Rasenti.

The launch included Mahikeng ambassadors Serai “Stoan” Seate, Rantebeng Makapan (who plays Thomas Mashaba in popular soapie, Generations), Tumelo Kepadisa better known as “Tuks”, Segale Mogotsi (Motsweding FM) and Motlapele “Molemi” Morule. These youngsters are all products of the city of diversity, culture and heritage, and are proud of where they come from, Mahikeng. Stoan said they are proud to be back home and they will have a meaningful impact on the lives of the Mahikeng community.

“It is us the residents of this town who have to take it where it belongs, and that is up there as the capital of this province. While saying we are beginning, you all have a role to play, let us start on a clean slate. We do acknowledge that there are challenges but we are here, and we want to address those challenges facing Mahikeng. People might know us as this town full of potholes and rubbish, but please know that there is also so much more to us than the negative things” said the Executive Mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality, Cllr Lenah Miga.
