Ithate Mahikeng Pre-Schools Waste Management Competition
The Youths in North West Youth Jobs in Waste Management Project placed in Mahikeng Local Municipality by the Department of Environmental Affairs has embarked on an anti-litter campaign “ITHATE MAHIKENG” going door to door educating our communities about proper handling of waste. The main purpose of awareness creation campaigns in communities is to change people’s attitudes and behaviour to ensure a healthy and clean environment. While many current initiatives lead to visually cleaner areas, it does not encourage sustainable practices that reduce littering and illegal dumping in the long run. More emphasis is required on awareness creation relating to implementation of the waste hierarchy. As such, waste minimization and waste separation at source are to be encouraged to enhance reuse and recycling activities.
On Friday 02 September 2016 these Youths held a Waste Management pre-schools competition at Mmabatho Civic Centre whereby pre-school learners had to compose a song, poem or drama on Waste Management. Four pre-schools: Grow and Glow, Reitshupile, Care A Lot and Solofelang participated in the competition. Grow and Glow went home with 1st prize, Care A Lot obtained second position, while Reitshupile and Solofelang obtained 3rd and 4th positions respectively. This competition was conducted to teach and instill the right value and behaviour on how to take care of the environment from an early age to ensure sustainable healthy and clean environment.

3rd Prize: Reitshupile ELC
