The department has allocated R1.675 m to the municipality to procure fire fighting uniforms, protective clothing and ICT equipments such as computers and printers in an effort to build capacity and reduce the risks in communities.

This follows the an assessment by the department which revealed non compliance with the legislative guidelines in line with uniform and protective clothing as well as basic ICT equipments.

MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements, Fenny Gaolaolwe who handed over the uniforms and ICT equipments today at Mahikeng fire station, said the department set aside R13 m to support municipalities to upgrade the disaster management and fire services in order to render efficient and effective service delivery.

‘We will do everything in our power to make sure that all the disaster management centres do comply with safety regulations by providing them with the necessary equipments. However, I want to appeal to our personnel at the centres, especially at fire stations to take their work seriously and respond to calls for emergency assistance, on time.

MEC Gaolaolwe said the department has also identified the need for a disaster management satellite office in Tshidilamolomo in Ratlou local municipality, due to the number of fire incidents that get reported from nearby villages.
