2015 National Science Week Launch

MINISTRY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AND MAHIKENG MUNICIPALITY LAUNCHED THE NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK

1 August 2015 – Mahikeng

Mahikeng Local Municipality Executive Mayor Gosiame Seatlholo acclaimed the launch of the National Science Week on 01 August 2015 at the Northwest University. Mahikeng is one of the cities celebrating the National Science Week across the country from 1 – 8 August 2015. The event was aimed at showcasing local innovations in science and technology. The launch also intended to promote areas of science and technology which includes Engineering, Mathematics, Physical Science and Chemistry.

 

Minister of Science and Technology Naledi Pandor encouraged young people and the community of Mahikeng to take an active interest in science as it has the potential to influence society positively. Acting Vice-Rector of Research and Planning at the North West University Eno Ebenso commented the events as it helps to solidify the country’s role in technological and scientific developments.

 

The event was planned to reach learners, educators and the public within the township and surrounding villages around Mahikeng Local Municipality as well as in the North West Province. The programme consisted of scientific experimentation, expos, science shows, educators’ workshops, research, career guidance and role modelling. The theme of National Science Week for 2015 is ‘International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies’.

 

Mayor Seatlholo said the launch of the National Science Week in this province is in harmony with the Freedom Charters clarion call which said the “Doors of Learning Shall be Open for all”. ‘The promotion of science and technology will hopefully enable South Africa and other African countries to be competitive globally and to grow their economies’ said Mayor.

 

The National Science Week further aims to provide a platform for scientists to engage each other and also to engage with the non-scientific communities in order to promote partnership between media and scientists. The National Science Week will also profile the work of the Department of Science and Technology.
Mayor thanked Minister and the North West University for this very important programme. She highlighted that the Mahikeng Rebranding Renewal Repositioning Programme (MRRP) goes hand in hand with the objectives of the National Science Week. through the MRRRP, Mahikeng airport will be reopened and Wi Fi technology will be introduced in some parts of the city.
